Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaShay Avery, Founder of Q-Avery, LLC., located in Waxhaw, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The business is consulting/training for first responders around mental health and other behavioral health topics.

Tell us about yourself

I am an advocate of humanity and equity. For me, emotional intelligence is not a buzzword; it's a way of life. I have years of experience in leadership, wellness, and proven outcomes, accompanied by an educational background in human behavior and executive leadership. I am poised to help your organization be the change it seeks. With multiple instructor behavioral health certifications and certification in Lean Six Sigma, my toolbox is filled with strategic assessment tools to identify client needs, evaluate barriers and gaps and capitalize on opportunities.

I am a strategic, effective communicator with engaging interpersonal skills. I do not subscribe to an "us and them" philosophy, as reputable research supports that the most productive teams and communities operate from a "we" mentality. I help leaders, teams, and individuals get to the "we."

Lastly, I have an 18-year history of working directly with first responders and have trained over a thousand with multiple agencies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is preventing first responders from going hands-on with members of their community that are in crisis. In addition, I have been able to provide them with the tools they need to address their own well-being.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is building the business, making appropriate connections, and building upon those.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify your target audience.
  2. Develop a strategy for reaching your target audience.
  3. Determine your "Why" and use it to create your vision and mission. The "Why" being why you do what you do and why people need your service.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Never give up on your vision!
