Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Hughes, Founder and CEO of Pursue Fitness, located in Bolton, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business, Pursue Fitness, is more than just a gym wear brand. We are a lifestyle brand that aims to inspire and motivate individuals to pursue their fitness goals. We offer a range of products, from t-shirts and stringer vests to shorts, designed with both functionality and style in mind. Our customers are fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and individuals who value high-quality gym wear. They are people who are committed to their fitness journey and appreciate clothing that enhances their performance and comfort.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a passion for fitness and training, and this passion was the driving force behind starting my own business. Initially, I was studying to become a pilot, but I realised that I wanted to create something of my own. I was drawn to the idea of combining my love for fitness with entrepreneurship. What motivates me each day is the desire to provide products that meet the needs of my customers and contribute positively to their fitness journey. Seeing the brand grow and reach people from all over the world is an incredible feeling that keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There have been many milestones in my journey as a business owner, but the biggest accomplishment is turning Pursue Fitness into a multi-million-pound brand. This was not an overnight success; it was the result of years of hard work, dedication, and learning. In our first full financial year, we turned over £395,000 with a £99,000 profit, which was a significant achievement considering we started with a small initial order and a limited budget. In 2020, we dispatched orders to more than 130 countries, which is a testament to the global reach and impact of our brand.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner comes with many challenges, and one of the hardest things is managing all aspects of the business by myself. This includes product development, supplier management, marketing, packing orders, customer service, and more. It's a 24/7 commitment that often requires late nights and early mornings. There's always something that needs attention, and it can be overwhelming at times. However, it's also incredibly rewarding to see the direct impact of your efforts on the growth and success of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and without debt if possible. This approach forces you to be resourceful and creative, and it reduces financial risk. It allows you to grow at your own pace and learn as you go.
  2. Be passionate about your business. Running a business requires a significant amount of time, energy, and dedication. If you're passionate about what you're doing, it won't feel like work, and you'll be more likely to overcome challenges and stay committed in the long run.
  3. Learn from your mistakes. Mistakes are inevitable in business, but they're also valuable learning opportunities. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but make sure to learn from them and use them as stepping stones towards improvement and success.
