Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andrew Salisbury, Founder, and CEO of Purity Coffee, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Purity Coffee is a health-conscious coffee company that makes every decision based on health. Our customers vary from the very health-conscious coffee drinker who wants to have the best organic coffee for health and those customers that are struggling with the sort of issues that great coffee can help with. Your choice of coffee matters to health, longevity, and performance.

Tell us about yourself

I started Purity after selling my software company in Latin America. My wife Amber was having some health issues and drinking a lot of coffee to get the instant energy she needed. She was reluctant to give up her coffee, so I started to research the health benefits of coffee to get the evidence I needed to persuade her to quit. I found the opposite of what I expected and that coffee is actually great for you but can be made better through conscious sourcing and roasting to maximize the health benefits. This is the coffee I wanted my wife to have.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I built a company in Latin America that was the largest distributor of call center products with offices in 5 countries and installations in 13 that I sold in 2011. I am most proud that afterward, I was able to start and build one of the fastest-growing coffee companies in the US in a new category of coffee and health. It couldn't be further removed from the nature of my previous business. (Inc Magazine ranked us in the INC 5000 as number 193 of the fastest growing companies in the US and #9 in food and beverage.)

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is business development in categories that have not been pursued before and with no playbook to follow. There wasn't a well-trodden path.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the biggest problem that you passionately want to solve, and that also your skill set puts you in a unique position to solve.
  2. Focus on your North Star and what problem you want to solve for other people and not your personal outcomes.
  3. Tell the truth and align with the people who would like you to succeed with your mission. Who cares that your business exists and thrives?

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Most of us drink coffee, and your choice of coffee is one of the highest leverage points that you have for your overall health and longevity. It's worth paying attention to.
