Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Walker, owner of Punch Bug Marketing, located in Park Hills, KY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Punch Bug Marketing. It is a full-service marketing agency that started in 2012. We help businesses steer their marketing strategy in the right direction to fuel growth. We work with a variety of clients but focus on luxury home design providers.
Tell us about yourself
I started the company after working as a freelancer for about a year. I learned a ton that first year and developed a passion for helping businesses get found (and get leads!). One of the aspects of my job that I love the most is getting to teach and consult with clients and their teams. Working with my agency is a collaborative effort, and it's fun to build that team.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building the business to be big enough to support both my wife and me. We were able to quit our 9-5 jobs and go on an adventure in entrepreneurship together!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Delegating tasks that you either aren't equipped to do or don't have the time to do. Running a business requires a lot of expertise, from legal needs to accounting. Knowing you have a support team that can help you manage all of the intricacies of your business is super important but not always easy to build.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a niche you already love and see if there is an opportunity to build a business around that.
- Learn from your peers and be open to new ideas.
- Don't let the business take over your life unless that's what you really want. Factor in family and personal time and know when you need to "close the office" for the day...even if you work from home like me.
