Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Graydon Moffat, founder of Graydon Skincare, located in Toronto, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Graydon Skincare, and we create powerfully natural skincare products. There are a lot of green beauty brands out there, but we set ourselves apart by focusing on clinically proven superfood ingredients. With my background as a vegan chef, I have a passion for nutrient-dense superfoods, and I love figuring out how those ingredients can benefit our skin (and rival the efficacy of mainstream legacy brands) when applied topically.

Our customers are people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds who want to create a sustainable skincare routine that they can feel good about. And when I say sustainable, I don’t just mean sustainable for nature (although that is very important to us). I also mean sustainable from an economical and ease-of-use perspective.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a vegan chef and yoga instructor. My love for nutrient-dense ingredients and healing inspired me to concoct skincare products in my kitchen using my favorite superfoods and trusted stick blender. I shared those creations with my yoga students and an esthetician friend, and the feedback was glowing! Hearing that my “eccentric smoothies” (as my friend called them) were producing meaningful results inspired me to create Graydon Skincare.

I’m motivated by my desire to give people good skin days every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I’ve accomplished so many things that I’m proud of
however, aligning with Canadian businesswoman and dragon Arlene Dickinson is a big highlight!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the complete lack of work/life balance. I spend most of my time working, and even when I do take some time for myself, I can’t stop those work thoughts from popping into my head. That said, it’s all worth it when we get positive feedback. It puts such a big smile on my face when I read customer reviews and know that I’m helping people have good skin days! And of course, when we’re recognized with awards like the Best Natural/Organic Skincare brand in the USA/CANADA at the 2021 Beauty Shortlist Awards, it makes all the hard work worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don’t try to do it all by yourself. I tried to be a one-woman show, and it’s just not a sustainable way to grow a business. Hire a team that you can learn from and rely on. I know that when you’re starting out, spending money on paying team members is scary, but it’s also an investment that pays off! I would also recommend finding like-minded people. There are a lot of great spaces online for entrepreneurs, and even if they are in a different industry, we all face similar challenges, and it’s nice to get some insight and feel like you’re not alone.
