Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jonathan Klein, Founder of PropTech Consulting, located in Weehawken, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Scaling business operations and managing risks associated with digital transformation are key challenges faced by every real estate firm. PropTech Consulting bridges the gap between real estate and technology by offering strategic growth advisory and digital twin concierge services. Working across the spectrum of property owners, developers, agents, and startups, PropTech Consulting is uniquely positioned to help optimize efficiency, increase acquisitions, and maximize revenue.

Tell us about yourself

Although PropTech provides many practical business solutions, I have always been fascinated with the potential societal benefits technology can offer for the common good and cultural sensitivity. The foundation of my interest in real estate and technology dates to my early experience, where I led the digital transformation of an influential metropolitan media company. Recognizing the power and connectivity of media and thought leadership, I began to explore how emerging technologies could accelerate business. With this background, I developed a go-to-market strategy, launching a mobile-first, 3D solution with open architecture for a reality capture company. Each day I have the privilege of engaging with leading investors, developers, startups, and key influencers, helping me to shape customized, sustainable, socially conscious business strategies for my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my greatest privileges has been to speak at national professional technology forums, where I am able to present and share my perspective with prominent thought leaders in real estate and technology at industry events, such as AWE, Geo Week and Blueprint.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, it is crucial not to become a victim of the "ostrich syndrome." We all know that the ostrich hides from danger by burying its head in the sand. I am constantly aware of the potential drawbacks of the "groupthink" phenomenon, and I am always receptive to a diversity of thought as I solve problems and manage projects.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay Focused.
The old saying "Rome wasn't built in a day" applies here. Just because you open a business does not mean you're going to start making money immediately. Many small business owners don't even see a profit for a few years while they use their revenues to recoup investment costs. If the business is not turning a profit after a substantial period, it is essential to examine issues that might impede growth.
  2. Provide Great Service.
In today's hyper-competitive business environment, the differentiating factor for being successful is the level of service that the business provides. This is where the saying "undersell and overdeliver" applies, and savvy business owners would be wise to follow it.
  3. Never stop learning and trying new things.
What is profitable now will not necessarily be profitable next year or a decade from now. So, do not let yourself fall into the customary "this is the way I've always done things" rut. You must be receptive to the latest ideas and methods. The best way to get answers is by reading everything you can about your industry, speaking with well-informed colleagues, and listening to your customers.
