Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peter Lejkowski, Owner of Propel Active Health & Lifestyle, located in Burlington, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Propel Active Health & Lifestyle is a healthcare and fitness centre, located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. We specialize in providing no-nonsense solutions for people who are injured, need to rehabilitate themselves back to health, return to their sport or simply improve their health and performance.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a "sports specialist chiropractor," and I have worked with active people my whole career (14 years now). I love working with active people of all ages and competitive levels. I utilize a very active approach to my healthcare, with the goal of returning my patients back to their activity of choice as soon as safely possible. I have been active my whole life, so I understand what it is like when an injury prevents you from participating in the activities you love. Movement is so essential to a healthy life. Your physical and mental well-being is tied to your ability to move safely and effectively. My job is to get people moving again. There is no lack of motivation when your job is to help people return to their sport, their job, or to be able to play with their kids again. My wife, who is also my business partner, absolutely shares the same vision. We work really well together.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When my wife Alison and I started this business, we had a clear vision for the type of brand and culture we wanted to incubate. We wanted to build trust. We wanted to be the clinic that provides "No-Nonsense Healthcare That Keeps You Moving." We prioritized that mission over everything else, including revenue/profit, knowing full well that once we reach a tipping point, we will have a brand that is built on a solid foundation. This was so crucial to our success up to this point. Our brand has been consistent since day one. We are very proud of this.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balance. The fact is that life does not stop just because you choose to become an entrepreneur. You work harder than you have ever had, yet life continues to roll on, pulling you in multiple directions. This is extremely difficult and not for everyone. If you have a clear vision and set realistic goals, you will get past the storm, but it will be difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a good support team (at home and in business).
  2. Have a clear vision, and don't stay from it.
  3. Learn to ask for help.
