Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Phillip Griffin, Lead Instructor of Professor Chef, located in North Providence, RI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

When we first started this business 13 years ago, we assumed our client base would be women. Boy, were we wrong, All ages, Men, Women, and even kids! We have noticed that more and more men are taking oven in the kitchen after they retire and their spouse is still working.

Tell us about yourself

I've been cooking since I was 14 in Vocational school, then in Johnson and Wales. Fast forward to 1999, I went back to school to get my MBA in accounting. Had to quit cheffing too many hours, and I did not have enough money to feed my family. Now with the cooking classes, we can schedule time off. I love teaching, and it's nice extra money to supplement my salary as an accountant.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our students, when they come back as they often do, we hear that they have implemented tips and tricks into their everyday cooking! We tell folks we don't teach recipes. With teach you tips and techniques, the recipes guide us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing costs. The inflation right now is killing us.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Get good PR and pitch stories to your local FREE newspaper!
2. Always give your customers something extra that they don't expect.
3. Return phone calls and emails A.S.A.P in less than 24 hours.
