I served as president of the Sales & Marketing Executives of Dallas, was on the Board of Directors for "Wipe Out Kids' Cancer," and am currently on the board of NSA-NT, National Speakers Association, North Texas.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a Texan by choice! I began to move through the Midwest and got to Dallas as quickly as I could! After graduating from Northern Illinois University with a double major in Speech Communications – Radio/TV/Film & Journalism – News Broadcasting, I spent two months looking for a job by phone and mail (there was no internet back then). I was hired by KHAS Radio in Hastings, NE, as the News Director (population: 20,000) and was told that "I had a face for radio!" At a salary of $500 per month and a lack of maturity, I was fired after six weeks but re-hired as a salesperson and afternoon drive announcer at the same pay plus ten percent commission.

I received no sales training but was immediately successful. I didn't know what I was doing right, so I began studying sales and success books. After increasing the station's revenue, I was hired by KSAL Radio in Salina, KS (40,000 population) and tripled my income. After working in small towns for four years, I found a job in Dallas at KLIF Radio and then WRR Radio selling advertising. But I wanted to apply my learning in the success and sales field and wanted to get into the people development business.

I worked with a self-development company and built the top distributorship for seven years out of 500 nationally and number one in the world with over 5,000 offices. Part of my success was developing a prospecting process that yielded over 400 referrals per month. I then began speaking and developing programs and training for individuals and companies in the areas of Sales, Leadership, Goal Setting, Time Management, Communication Skills, and Customer Service. I wrote: "Sell When You See the Whites of Their Eyes" to show salespeople how to develop twice the income in half the time. Years ago, I couldn't spell salesperson, and today "I am one!"

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Becoming Distributor & Franchise of the year for seven consecutive years out of 500 franchisees nationally and World Sales Leader out of over 5,000 franchisees internationally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Developing CCDA: Correct, Consistent Daily Activity. Develop a plan based on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goal of what needs to be accomplished. CCDA leads to results when the goals & objectives are clear!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop your Definite Chief Aim, Vision, Purpose, Goals & Objectives, and stick to them, no matter what! Once you believe it...never quit or give up!
  2. Practice CCDA: Correct, Consistent Daily Activity - never stop learning!
  3. Surround yourself with colleagues, friends, and/or mentors that are positive, and that want to help.
