Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Justine McGrath, Owner of ProACTive Coaching, located in Dublin, Ireland.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ProACTive Coaching provides assessments in Emotional Intelligence, Coaching, and Training to organisations that wish to improve their productivity. 75% of Fortune 500 companies use EI training because they understand the benefits - improved communication, more trust, and increased productivity.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been interested in what makes people successful and why so many organisations do not understand that emotions drive behaviour. I started ProACTive Coaching to help leaders understand the importance of developing their self-awareness and EI to improve, not just themselves but those with whom they interact daily. I am motivated every day by the opportunity to see the change in leaders and organisations through developing and practicing Emotional Intelligence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I started my business back in 2008, I was incredibly naive and knew very little about the demands of running your own business, even as a sole trader. What I have learnt is that every year is a year for growth and learning. Every year I learn a new skill or business practice in the field of coaching, training, and EI. It is this that has made the difference in taking me from a business that was going nowhere to what I consider a thriving venture.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a sole trader, I am the marketing department, the accounts department, the trainer, the coach, and everything else! Although I like being in control of my own business, sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For anyone considering starting their own business, firstly, I would say make sure you are comfortable with financial insecurity and massive change. If you can't handle those two things, you are not going to survive. Secondly, you have to be incredibly passionate about what you are doing/selling or providing. It is that passion that will get you through the hard days. Finally, be 100% clear on your 'why' before you start and continue to clarify that as you grow and change. Adaptability is key.
