Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maki Drollinger, owner of Pro Relief Chiropractic, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a Texas licensed chiropractor certified in Active Release Technique and Dry needling. I treat all kinds of patients who suffer from acute or chronic musculoskeletal problems that are not limited to neck and low back pain. Many patients come for shoulder, elbow, and knee pain, and patients like how I utilize all techniques to make them better. I also treat postpartum women who need to realign the pelvis after giving birth.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and was a middle-distance runner myself from Junior high to college. My undergraduate degree is in Physical Education, and I’ve always been interested in human anatomy. At the age of 23, I came to the U.S and pursued my career as a chiropractor. I always dreamed about having my clinic, and finally, I did. My motivation is to help relieve patients’ pain, promote well-being, and increase productivity in life. I am also the only Japanese chiropractor in Houston. Hopefully, I can help the Japanese community through my chiropractic services.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I moved from another state a few years ago. First-year of practicing in Houston, I subleased the room from another chiropractor. I provided comprehensive treatment to each patient, eventually gained the patient population, and expanded my business to where I am now!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am the owner, chiropractor, manager, marketer, biller, and cleaning lady. Yes, I do everything myself, so my job is endless, and that is the most challenging part, but I love it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to know your capacity physically, mentally, and financially. Don’t go overboard. Start small and expand gradually.
  2. Treat customers, clients, and patients with respect and dignity. If you do, people are following you, and your business will bloom!
  3. Work and life balance are vital.
