Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Priya Tew, a dietitian and TV presenter based in Southampton, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm Priya; I'm a dietitian plus mum to 6 kids, so I spin many plates. I work clinically in the eating disorder and mental health field. I also consult with brands, offering nutrition advice, creating recipes, and doing PR work. I work with the media and TV companies, and I'm the author of 2 nutrition books.

Tell us about yourself

I love what I do. Nutrition is such a cutting-edge area to be in. Being someone who loved science, cooking, and also people, being a dietitian was the obvious step. In my clinical work, working within mental health can be tough; however, my patients keep me going. There is such a need for support right now, and anyone I can help makes it worthwhile. My consultancy and media work is really my creative outlet and brings me a lot of joy. I'm known for my TV appearances and the art of breaking down nutrition into simple messages that everyone can carry away to use.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Often I think it is just getting up each day and cracking on with the work! Staying motivated and focused. However, I've been a TV presenter, I've written 2 nutrition books, and I've won several awards from my professional body. I'm fortunate to be well thought of in my field and have other dietitians supporting me too. However, my biggest accomplishment is probably not only getting through lockdown as a single mum but writing 2 books and keeping not only my family safe but the business afloat.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I work alone, and that brings challenges. Having others to bounce ideas off and just a chat in the day over a cuppa can be super helpful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a mentor, it is how I started out, and it really shaped me. I currently have a business mentor, and I often work with students supporting them.
  2. Don't be afraid to try new things. Yes, sometimes they go wrong, but that's all a learning process. Often they go right, and you fly.
  3. Keep connected to others. I love social media for being linked to others in my field. You never know when you may need that connection.
