Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in advertising services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayleigh Janssen, Founder of Prismatic Creative Co, located in Comox, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Prismatic Creative Co helps small businesses dazzle their customers through strategic and thoughtful branding, web design, and social media management.

Tell us about yourself

I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing in 2019. While I was finishing up my last course for my degree, I realized that I really wasn't interested in working for a big company or an agency where I felt constrained to think inside the box. I wanted to work one-on-one with business owners to help them realize their goals for their business and bring them to life visually. I started with a strong focus on marketing but slowly learned that my passion lied in branding (both through visual identity and brand strategy), web design, and social media. In 2022, I decided to niche down and focus on what I loved, which really helped me stay motivated and continue to pursue my small business. I love the feeling of helping business owners see their vision come to life so they can run a successful business themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every project is a big accomplishment to me in its own way. Most recently, I was asked to write an article on web design, particularly in the wedding industry, something that I never thought I would have the opportunity to do!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning boundaries has most certainly been one of the most challenging things to learn as a business owner. When you're early in your business, 'no' is a word that you will likely barely use, even when you should. As I've grown with my business, I have learned that my time is worth everything, and there will always be a client or customer who appreciates you and your work. So if a client or customer doesn't feel right to you, don't feel like you have to say yes to everything that comes your way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't undervalue yourself. Know your worth. You have invested time and money into furthering your skills and knowledge. Your client or customer has not. Don't sell yourself short!
  2. Imposter syndrome is real, but you don't need to be afraid of it. Whether you've been in the business for 6 months or 6 years, you might feel the urge to compare yourself to others doing something similar to you, making you feel like an imposter in your industry. You are good at what you do, and you've always got this!
  3. If something doesn't feel right to you, say no. Working with difficult clients can take a toll on you, drain your creativity and make your hourly wage turn into pennies. If your client is trying to go past the scope of your project, just say no! Don't feel bad if a client doesn't work out because there will always be another client who adores you and values your work.
