Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Faith Clough, CEO of Prime Body Studios, located in Tampa, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Prime body studios is a boutique fitness studio in the Citrus Park area of Tampa, Florida.
Tell us about yourself
I started in fitness after my father passed away from cancer; it became my coping mechanism; over time, I learned more about the benefits of nutrition and fitness for cancer, and it drove me to outside more in the nutrition space. As I grew into a fitness professional, I experienced a horrible breakup with my son's father, leaving me a single parent. A single parent who was trying to figure it out. The fitness that was once my coping mechanism had now become my driving force; through fitness, I would take chances I would normally walk away from through nutrition, and I had clarity in my decisions. I finished school and got a job as a nutrition behavior counselor, and then six years later, three months before my son was to leave for FSU (our dreams finally coming true?), my company called me in to tell me they had to class. I knew that was my chance to provide for my community. I created prime body studios with a box of cash I had saved and my severance leaving .56 cents in my bank account! Every day I am thankful for my decision and ability to lean into discomfort, and I attribute the ability to fitness and nutrition.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Staying open during COVID, thriving afterward, and maintaining integrity throughout the process. Even when we had nothing, I still gave away free sessions to single parents during that time. I stayed true to my values when life tested every ounce of my well-being.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Getting hurt by an employee or member and remembering to still show love to the next person, not getting tainted by the struggle of others!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start, it doesn't have to be perfect; you will figure it out as you go.
- Listen to someone who has done it; we want to share; we are telling you what to do and not do bc we did it (and it hurt).
- Never quit, rest, reset but never quit; there will be more days you want to quit than anyone understands. KEEP GOING and let things flow; don't try to control them so much.
