Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mike Kail, CTO of PrimaryIO, located in Los Altos, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We have developed a Disaster Recovery as a Service platform for VMware workloads that provides Continuous Data Protection utilizing IBM Cloud as the DR Target site. Early customers will be Small-Medium Enterprises that desire an intuitive, cost-effective DR solution.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the Technology Industry for 30+ years and have always enjoyed working on innovative solutions and pushing the envelope with like-minded individuals. I'd been an Advisor to PrimaryIO for several years, and when given the opportunity to join and lead the R&D team, it was an absolute no-brainer. I tend to be intrinsically self-motivated, but I love working with other smart people who share a common vision.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As any Entrepreneur will attest to, raising capital is a significant accomplishment, and combined with that, hitting aggressive milestones has been extremely satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Similar to the above, raising capital is never easy, but in addition, I'd say that keeping a laser focus on the right priorities is always a balancing act.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Read "The Hard Thing About Hard Things" by Ben Horowitz.
  2. Assemble the best Leadership team possible with solid foundations of trust and respect.
  3. Grit and Determination will be required on a daily basis, and make sure you are prepared for the marathon journey.
