Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Flach, President and CEO of Pretty Girl Makeup, located in Mill Valley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m the founder and CEO of Pretty Girl Makeup and a celebrity makeup artist.

Tell us about yourself

I started out as a makeup artist and then created my line; I love what I do so much, whether it is on a photo shoot or working for my company. I wake up every morning excited to start my day and see what the day unfolds with my company or being a makeup artist.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That I’ve been in business for over 20 years, have no debt, and I’m self-funded.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It’s 24 /seven. If you’re self-funded and have employees, it’s a lot of pressure. You never really have a day off because you’re constantly thinking about it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love it enough that you don’t mind not making money and then figuring out how to get paid.
  2. I am lucky enough that I can be a makeup artist and own a makeup company, so if you can have two sources of income, that’s really helpful.
  3. When you’re starting a business or a company, figure out something in your life that you want to change; in my case it was I was in a constant battle with drinking water and putting on lips gloss; I couldn’t find one that would stay on long enough it wasn’t drying. So I hired a beauty chemist and created my own.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am a sepsis awareness advocate; my husband, former number one tennis player Ken Flach passed away of sepsis four years ago, and since then, I have been trying to raise awareness, and I am also a grief expert after having lost my son, my mother, and my husband. Grieving in a positive way. I set up educational funds at the northern light school in Oakland; I helped to create the bow Friedman outdoor classroom. I am very passionate about education and nutrition and helping kids to plant seeds, harvest vegetables, cook, and do science experiments from a young age; I truly feel it will enable them to have a life that has good nutrition, which I believe leads to happiness.
