Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Powe, Founder of Prepped by Bec, located in Costa Mesa, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a healthy meal delivery service. My customers range from 13 years old to over 90 years old and are typically busy mothers, working professionals, athletes, fitness trainers...or just about anyone who values healthy, portion-controlled, delicious food!

Tell us about yourself

In 2015, I was employed as a Nutritionist for a Bariatric Weight Loss Clinic in Newport Beach, California. In my time with this program, I was responsible for counseling patients in their journey through weight loss surgery pre-op, post-op, and in their recovery and adjustment to a healthier lifestyle. I quickly learned that the most prevalent problem for those who desperately needed to lose weight was the availability of convenient and healthy options. I felt a need to find a way to be part of a real solution for those who desired to eat healthy but were consumed by their careers, families, other responsibilities, and misinformation about how to eat healthy! I began meal prepping for my first client in September 2015 and have never looked back. Helping people find a balance between their busy lives and their nutrition/fitness/appearance goals is what excites me and motivates me to do the work that I do!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud that I started my business at such a young age and have sustained my business through my marriage, the birth of my two babies, and then through a global pandemic. I have devoted so much time to pivoting through the challenges that come with motherhood, business owner life, as well as the uncertainty of our world and economy.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is the responsibility of working 24 hours a day with no real days off. The weight of owning a business, especially a business with employees, can be very heavy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. GO FOR IT!
  2. Don't give up when you are faced with things that feel impossible. Instead, take a breath, think about other times that you persevered, and come up with an action plan.
  3. Treat others (employees, customers, vendors, etc.) exactly how you would want to be treated.
