Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Johanna Andrews Adlam, founder, and CEO of Premexcellence, located in Patchogue, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Premexcellence is a coaching and consulting company committed to designing what excellence looks like for professionals in their careers and lives, students in higher education, and organizations and institutions working in public health research or programs. My career and life coaching services help professionals design a meaningful and rewarding career and life path aligned with their purpose and values. My academic consulting services help undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students with their academic performance, personal skill-building, and completing their thesis or dissertation research projects. Lastly, my public health consulting services support organizations and institutions with social and behavioral health research initiatives and program development efforts.

Tell us about yourself

I have over thirteen years of experience conducting interdisciplinary research studies and leading diverse research teams at the academic and health system level. Shortly after receiving my Ph.D. in Public Health, I had the desire to leverage all of my enriching and diverse experiences to start my own academic and public health consulting business. However, I knew something was missing from my vision of a fulfilling business. I also wanted to build upon my strengths of developing meaningful relationships, helping people reach their personal and professional goals, and positively impacting the world. Thus, I pursued professional coach training and became a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). As a result, I joyously included career and life coaching services into my business model.

I am motivated daily to support other professionals, students, and organizations or institutions through my unique coaching style and individualized consulting services because of my personal experiences. I can relate to where my clients are on their journeys, and my passion for seeing them reach their goals with intention is why I started my business. In my own pursuit of academic and professional excellence, I understand what it is like to be a student or professional experiencing obstacles and challenges that arise along the way. I also hold the unique experience of being a woman of color in these spaces. As a result of my journey, I have developed successful and purposeful strategies to overcome these barriers.

Additionally, I am committed to helping other professionals design meaningful and rewarding career and life paths aligned with their purpose and values, similar to what I achieved. Every day I strive to help my clients achieve their vision of excellence on their professional and academic journeys.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is witnessing my clients' successes as they meaningfully achieve their vision of excellence in their lives, careers, or academic programs. They consistently transcend artificial expectations, courageously create their own paths, and confidently accomplish all of their goals. I am truly honored to work with all the remarkable individuals who enroll in my services.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging areas of being a business owner is managing the "business" aspect of coaching and consulting services. I am currently a solopreneur. Thus, I need to perform administrative and marketing tasks as well as provide services to my clients, which can be overwhelming at times. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly check in with myself to ensure that I have the adequate balance to be an effective Coach and Consultant.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember that you are a whole person with needs outside of your business! It is essential that you develop a healthy balance and consistently make a choice to honor all parts of you so that you can be the best at what you do.
  2. Invest in practical systems and structures that will streamline services in your business so that you can be more efficient with your time. The right tools will provide you with the space and opportunity to work with more clients and grow your business.
  3. Always believe in yourself and the vision for your business! No matter how many challenges you encounter, adopting a positive mindset will help you to stay the course. Be grateful for where you are on your journey, appreciate the lessons learned, and use them to inform your next steps as you build your evolving business.
