Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in branding and marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bennett Coleman, founder of Port City Media Co., located in Mt. Pleasant, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the Founder and Creative Director of Port City Media, a full-service Digital Marketing Agency out of Charleston, SC. We specialize in Logos & Branding, Copywriting, Websites, Photo/Video, Social Media, and Paid Digital Marketing for clients all over the world.

We don't have a niche market, so our clients range from fragrance companies, law firms, financial advisors, restaurants, real estate companies, breweries, musicians, and the best golfer in the world (Yes, we got to work with Tiger Woods & Darius Rucker on a project...)

Tell us about yourself

I've worked in cutting-edge agencies my entire professional career as a designer, developer, photographer, videographer, social media marketer, and paid digital advertiser, so I definitely know my stuff. And at a certain point, I just knew it was time to start an agency of my own.

I really enjoy what my agency does; at the end of the day, we're helping solve problems that keep business owners up at night. It's embarrassing to admit how much I enjoy good marketing, identity design, photography, and videography, but I guess that's what makes me so good at my job. Our clients love our passion for what we do!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting completely from scratch and continuously growing the business year over year. Getting our own brick-and-mortar office and seeing our signage on the building is always an exciting thing to see.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing so many hats... A great business owner delegates day-to-day tasks, but early on, it is a challenge keeping track of all the many roles required to run a business successfully: sales, accounting, production, creative direction, project management, and new business development, to name a few...

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make your objectives completely clear. Don't just wing it; actually have a plan and actionable steps.
  2. Invest in yourself. The most expensive thing you can do is be cheap, invest in good marketing and the tools of your industry, and scale accordingly.
  3. Scale Accordingly. Don't overextend yourself and grow too fast; growth isn't certain, so get used to the peaks and valleys and be ready for both.
