Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steph De John, Owner of Pop Arts & Crafts, located in Kingston, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pop Arts & Crafts is an Eco-friendly business that makes accessories for the strange and unusual. Whether you have to find a gift for an ER nurse who's had a rough two years of working through a few plagues or need a pair of earrings to show off your love of cockroaches, you'll be able to find something thoughtfully made by a small business.

Tell us about yourself

Originally I started my career in the TV & Film industry but left to find a steady paycheck. While looking for a new career, I decided to turn my hobby into a side hustle. I found a job in tech and worked with an artist in the animation industry to make my designs come to life, and my first pins and earrings were born. I continued to grow my side hustle into a business during the pandemic. I'm motivated every day by the stories I hear from my customers about how they connect with my pieces and are inspired by history and the science of the world around us.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been going for the Eco-friendly option as often as possible. It isn't always the cheapest option, but I hope I can inspire other businesses to do the same.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is having to wear all of the hats while you're building up. That's why it's so amazing when people choose to support a small business. Every time you buy from one of us, we have the means to hire someone to wear one of our hats!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work on something that you are passionate about.
  2. There's so much information out there. Take the time to look.
  3. Trust yourself.
