What's your business, and who are your customers?
Polished Makeup & Hair is a team of professional makeup artists and hairstylists based in Houston, TX, with the goal of helping women feel polished, powerful, and confident. We specialize in airbrush makeup and love being part of helping someone feel like the best version of themselves. Think of our makeup style as makeup for the girl that doesn’t usually wear makeup. It feels comfortable & lightweight, looks natural, and lasts. Most of the women we work with are attending a gala, wedding, special event, photoshoot, birthday party, and any other type of event where you want to feel beautiful.
Tell us about yourself
I started doing makeup professionally in 2010 and haven’t stopped since. For the first six years, I focused on photography and special event makeup, and then for the next six years, I added weddings and airbrushes to the mix. Over the years, I have traveled around the world doing makeup for photoshoots and teaching makeup classes in places like Thailand, Canada, Spain, Lithuania, and all over the United States. The busier I got, the more help I needed. So, to meet the demand for my makeup services, I grew my makeup business from a one-woman show to an amazing 15 team members, and still growing.
A few things that motivate me are:
• The desire to help others feel confident and beautiful.
• I love getting to help others live their dream as a makeup artist.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a makeup artist, my biggest accomplishment so far is being able to travel around the world to do makeup, this has been my goal since the beginning of my makeup journey!
As a business owner running a company with a team of 15, my biggest accomplishment is my team! I have a group of amazing artists that help make the business as successful as it is today. I am honored to have such professional, wonderful, kind-hearted, talented artists on my team, and I am excited to add more in the near future. Each artist has their own special way of making clients look and feel absolutely awesome.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The work never stops. Being a business owner is not a 9-5 job, which can make the boundaries of working vs. relaxing difficult. As an entrepreneur, there is always something to be done for the business, so taking time for yourself is essential. Learning to set work aside to simply take care of myself and nothing else is my toughest battle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a goal and a plan.
- Find your ideal customer, then go after that customer.
- Set work boundaries for your health and invest in yourself.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
There are tons of people who might try to talk you out of starting your own business or tell you it’s not possible. Listen to what YOU think is right for your life and run with it. Don’t let anyone talk you out of your dream because they were not blessed with your vision. As an entrepreneur, YOU ARE THE BOSS!
