Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chad Bourquin, Founder of Play Music Make More, located in Overland Park, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A complete comprehensive guide to building a successful and profitable music business. 19 modules with topics like booking your band, managers, agents, connecting with fans, and much, much more!! Our courses and training are for any solo artist, band leaders, and/or owners that are interested in gaining the tools and insight to run their own independent music business, making it more profitable and enjoyable.

Tell us about yourself

After years of struggling in the music business, my life took a number of turns that added very valuable and interesting knowledge and training. When I returned to the music business, I had all experience from being an entertainment agent, running an advertising company, and leading a sales organization, plus all the past mistakes I made in the entertainment world. This was extremely helpful in launching our group Big Time Grain Company. In fact, our music career went to levels we had always dreamed of, sharing the stage with major artists, playing for our largest crowd of 800,000 people, and creating a viable and profitable music business. A few years back, we began creating programs to teach other artists how to obtain the same success. It didn't make sense to keep it to ourselves, and we love making a difference in a very misunderstood industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To date, our biggest accomplishment is being part of other artists improving their music business and obtaining their goals. As amazing as it is living out our own dreams, it's way cooler helping others.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

My biggest challenge currently has been scaling. I personally have about topped out with my own bandwidth and am working hard to get better at adding others to help accomplish more within our own company.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Whenever you think of new ideas, ask who can help accomplish that idea instead of how I am going to accomplish it.
  2. Learn to employ yourself. The tendency is to let other people rule your schedule, and that can be a business killer.
  3. Enjoy the process and choose great people to work with.
