Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eva Offermans, Founder of Placement on Purpose, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Placement on Purpose.

I recruit like-minded talent for purpose-driven companies across all industries. My clients are mostly in Europe and North America, and especially in NYC, where I live.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in recruitment for 15 years, starting out as an agency recruiter and ending up as a VP of Global Talent Acquisition on Wall Street. I worked in different countries and across industries and saw the same pain point everywhere: the system is broken. By design, recruiters are focused on the short-term vs. the long-term and operate transactionally vs. strategically. As they are incentivized by placing NOW to get their commission, they don't see value in nurturing long-lasting relationships and building meaningful talent networks.

I wanted to do it differently. I play the long game. For my clients, I act as an extension of their team and a true ambassador for their mission. I don't only find them qualified talent, but also those human beings that breathe their values and are invested in growing with the organization. For my talent, I want to genuinely match them to work that is meaningful to them and therefore improves their quality of life, now or when the time is right.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I only do work that is aligned with my values and that brings me joy and that I make a good living with it (in NYC!)

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

That you have to do it all (from business development to accounting), and not just that thing that you're an expert in, also, it takes patience, and you have to learn to trust the process and enjoy the journey because you never know for sure where your next money is coming from.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a growth mindset. You can literally learn anything you set your mind to.
  2. Be flexibly consistent
  3. Enjoy the journey
