Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jane Piper, Founder of Pipsy, located in Zurich, Switzerland.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The way we work has to change to meet the challenges of a complex, digital world. I help HR leaders to achieve impact by supporting them to redesign work, workplaces, and ways of working. My customers are senior HR leaders in medium to large corporations, typically in the knowledge sector.

Tell us about yourself

We spend about 1/3 of our life at work. I'm motivated that people find this enriching and enjoyable. Too often, our workplaces focus solely on financial goals, shareholder value, and returns on investment. Our human capital and capacity are equally, or even more important. I help develop leaders and HR teams to rethink the way we work to create a positive and fulfilling experience for their people. I started my business building on what I knew from 25 years working in corporate HR roles, and have developed from there into looking at new ways we can lead and manage people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing a book, Focus in the Age of Distraction, and achieving bestseller status on Amazon.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are so many things that you "should" do to make your business better. It is hard to decide what to focus on to really achieve your goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get good advice, and learn from someone who has already learned how to run a small business, either a coach or a course. Watch out for oversold "you can make a 6 figure income overnight" charlatans.
  2. Invest in systems that save you time - e.g., finance system, CRM.
  3. Find or build a support network around you - there are many good business communities. Being part of them can make you feel less lonely and offer good advice.
