Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cynthia Tidwell, Founder of Pink Glitter Thrift Boutique, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

Pink Glitter Thrift Boutique is a nonprofit organization that sells trendy new and like new clothing, shoes, and accessories for women and girls to raise awareness for breast cancer and support women undergoing cancer treatment. My customers are women of all ages.

Tell us about yourself

In 2009, at age 32, I experienced an abnormal breast examination. The Center for Disease Control recommends having mammograms at age 40. At that time, I was scared but hoped that I would not have Breast Cancer. During that time, I realized that cancer does not discriminate. At my second screening, there were women from various backgrounds and income groups. I had two praying friends that accompanied me. We all joined in prayer…black, brown, or white didn't matter. PINK brought us all together! I was one of the blessed ones, I did not have cancer, but it was then that I started my research on the statistics. I found out that white women were diagnosed at higher numbers, but more black and brown women die each year to late diagnosis. Spreading awareness motivates me every day. When people walk in Pink Flitter, they are given information on free breast cancer screenings in the Middle TN area.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

I feel most successful when I get cards or phone calls from cancer patients that express how the pampering events have impacted their lives. I feel like the wealthiest person in the world!!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being an organization?

The hardest thing I've ever had to do was depend on people. I've always been independent. As the founder of a nonprofit, I have to step outside of my comfort zone and form partnerships, ask for donations, and position myself around people that can help me to get to the next level. It's constant learning and growing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Research your market.
  2. Have a clear business plan.
  3. Don't expect the people that know you to support you.
