What's your business, and who are your customers?
Pilatesology is the online home for classical Pilates. We offer on-demand workouts for all levels and body needs with no equipment and Pilates studio apparatus. Our members are Pilates enthusiasts looking for the highest quality instruction, as well as teachers looking to learn from the top experts in the world.
Tell us about yourself
About 2 years into my Pilates teaching career, I met my husband, who was a photographer at the time. My clients were always asking me for a video that they could use on vacation, so Jack and I made one. This was in the 90s before smartphones made video easy, so it took us 10 years to figure out how to put our videos on a membership site which we did in 2011.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The incredible community we have on Pilatesology! Before Pilates, I was a book publicist, and I love to connect with people and spread the word about the best products. So when we started hearing from our members about how much they get out of Pilatesology and communicating with each other through our events, forums, and more, I was blown away. It's totally rewarding to know that we've built a community that supports people.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Doing all the things! It's easy to get off track on projects that don't matter, so I try to stay focused on the things that make me happy as well as earn a living.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Test your idea in a way that doesn't cost you a bunch of $.
- Write a business plan.
- Get advice from people who are experts in the field you want to enter.
