What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Petralyte, and we make electrolyte products for dogs and cats. Although dogs and cats are also warm-blooded mammals who capitalize on evaporative cooling to thermoregulate when hitting the trail on a hot day, they do not have the same physiology as we humans. We lose a lot of water and sodium when we sweat, but dogs and cats—when panting to cool off—only lose water. Studies show that oral electrolyte solutions increase water intake and promote recovery in dogs and cats. You have your favorite electrolyte drink for rehydrating, but it was not made for your furry friend and is too high in sodium for their canine or feline needs.
Tell us about yourself
I came up with an idea in 2020 after seeing so many ads for human electrolytes but realized there was nothing in the pet space. I consulted a team of vets, and we came up with a formula originally for dogs, and now we have expanded to cats.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Hearing stories from pet owners and how much our product helped their animals is priceless for us, and we started the business with that goal in mind.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is a 24-hour job, and while I would never want to go back to working for anyone, there is really no "clocking out" when you have your own company.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Think about your passions, do market research, and try to see if there are any products that you think could be useful in the said marketplace. Working in the pet space for me has been a blessing because I absolutely love animals.
