Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peter Hill, Founder of Peter Hill International, located in Honolulu, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an international career and transformational mindset coach. I coach expat executives and global professionals who have always excelled at what they do but have had an "accidental career." I help them reconnect with what is truly meaningful for themselves, unlock new levels of confidence about exactly what they want in the next stage of their career, and help them get unstuck from what is holding them back from achieving more.

Tell us about yourself

I started in this space in 1999 when I began supporting job seekers as a professional résumé writer. Over time, clients began asking for support beyond just the résumé, such as coaching on career decision-making, generating interviews, interview preparation, and salary negotiation. In 2005, I rebranded as Peter Hill International. These days we infuse transformational mindset coaching into all our coaching because we believe that 80% of success is mindset. Maybe 100%!

What pulls me forward each and every day are my vision and mission:

Spiritual Vision: To end suffering in the professional lives of people around the world. One person at a time = ripple effect

Mission: Our mission at Peter Hill International is to alleviate stress and overwhelm in the lives of executive leaders around the world so that they can unleash THEIR talents to make the impact they are meant to make in the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the past two decades, I’ve been blessed to have personally coached thousands of private clients who are citizens of 120+ countries. And 10,000+ people have been supported through my programs, workshops, and keynotes. Along the way, I've been fortunate to have lived and worked in Nagoya, Japan, Shanghai, China, and London in the UK.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The vast majority of business owners grapple with patterns of thinking such as:

  • I'm not good enough
  • Things should be happening more quickly, or I'm not as far along as I should be
  • There isn't enough time to get everything done
  • Everyone else seems to be killing it — what am I doing wrong?

This is normal, and it is critical to learn how to dehabituate ourselves from the negative bias of the mind.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on your mission. In large part, this is what you will lean on to pull you through the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship.
  2. Get clear on which clients/customers you truly enjoy serving and why.
  3. Learn to say "no" to working with clients who you sense will sap your energy rather than feed your energy.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship is the ultimate expression of you, your passions, your beliefs, and your personal development. Put on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.
