Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Belzer, owner of Pet In The City, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

It is a pet supply store. Not just any pet supply store. We are full of people who truly care about your pets. We offer educated advice; we constantly add quality products. We offer self-doggie wash service, grooming, Acupressure, and red lighting through our local partner, dog training through a local partner, and a lot of events, from a dog or car adoptions to local pops ups and parties for our neighborhood.

Tell us about yourself

I love the ability to add years to your pet's life. That's all. I love solving common problems and hearing how they worked…I love offering quality products that you can't get just anywhere, I love teaching, and I love learning new things. So does my staff.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm open! It's a hard business when competing with big box and non-local chains. I'm growing at a good rate, and the neighborhood embraces us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Patience, good things come to those who wait.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do it! Be knowledgeable about what you want to do, have a passion for it, learn what it takes to be a business owner. And double what you think the effort will be. It's very hard at times, but the rewards are worth it.
