Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ron Tribendis, Co-Owner of Performance Medicine & Sports Therapy, located in Plano, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am co-owner of Performance Medicine & Sports Therapy. I have been in practice for over 15 years, serving Plano and its surrounding areas. Our goal was to bring different medical disciplines under one roof to provide comprehensive care to patients and their families. We heard the same story over and over again. Patients were getting pushed from specialty to specialty without a comprehensive plan. Even clinics that promote the multidisciplinary approach were nothing more than providers sharing space. They weren't truly working together to improve the patient and their needs. We streamline a patient's care with a plan, put egos aside, and get them to the provider they need. We maintain continuity of care throughout the entire process. While our name suggests, we treat many athletes. But don't let the name fool you. We take this same approach with weekend warriors, active moms, grandparents, and desk jockeys. We increase the performance of everyone - not just athletes.

Tell us about yourself

Being an avid athlete my entire life, I saw the need for organization in the sports medicine world. There are so many athletes and patients left without a plan. They are left to try to figure it out by themselves while dealing with some injury. The mental and physical strain can be overwhelming. While working with professional athletes can be very exciting, what motivates me each day is seeing the ten-year-old athlete grind through a training session. Seeing an active grandmother tear up because she isn't in pain anymore and can visit her grandkids. Watching our teamwork as a single unit to help young athletes get back on the field or court. Motivation in business has changed for me over the years. It isn't about how many dollars are brought into the clinic but how many lives we can change. Prosperity is a result of service.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting from a small treatment room that I was renting to a state-of-the-art 15,000 ft facility. I am forever grateful and humbled. It has allowed us to realize our vision, provide jobs, and service the community more effectively.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The understanding that nothing is going to go perfectly. Most people that own businesses are type "A." They want things to run smoothly. This is NEVER going to happen. There are always going to be fires that need to be put out. Accepting this early on will serve you well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Marketing: The number one best marketing advice - CARE. When you truly care about the service or product you are selling, it shows. People can feel it.
  2. Team: Fire quickly. If you even get the slightest feeling someone isn't going to work out in your company. Let them go ASAP. Bad energy turns into cancer for you and your company. Trust me; you are doing them a favor too. It may not feel like it at the time, but a year will go by, and you will be like - "Wow, I should have done that sooner."
  3. Continue education: Read, read, read. Become an expert and leader in your field.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I currently live in Frisco with my wife, Amy, and two boys, Eli and Isaac. I live an active lifestyle. I am a very amateur photographer. Probably my biggest side passion as of late is coaching my ten-year-old's football team. The PMST Falcons can be seen at the facility grinding. Fly Falcons!
