Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sebastien Godin, Account Manager of Performance Marketers, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a digital marketing agency with a slightly different approach than the typical agency, which offers websites, banners, advertising management, and those kinds of things because that is not what business owners want. Business owners want leads and sales… so that is what we offer, along with some leads and sales guarantees to ensure each of our partnerships is a win-win.

Our customers are raging from B2C eCommerce businesses to local service providers and enterprise B2B businesses. Whatever you sell, we can make something work for you.

Tell us about yourself

What got me started in marketing was really my passion for it. It really got started when I started reading blogs online about marketing strategies and how to grow an audience online through content marketing, email marketing, advertising, and more. Since then, I’ve never stopped reading and learning from other online marketing experts, which is really mandatory in our industry because it’s an environment that is constantly and rapidly changing. More now than ever. I am a very proud individual, meaning my achievements are very important to me. This makes me want to always be a better version of myself than I was yesterday and motivates me to get the results I am looking for in a business or in life. Being able to help other entrepreneurs do the same is also something that makes me very proud and something that motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe my biggest accomplishment so far was to reach the 1M revenue mark for the agency after starting from scratch. We know that getting your first sales is always the hardest, so now that I’ve achieved the “hardest part,” I feel like the sky is the limit.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Accept a “failure,” roll up your sleeves, go at it again (differently this time) and overcome obstacles that inevitably will happen in business. A failure isn’t a failure unless you give up. Nothing is perfect, and you will recover as long as you learn from it and that it makes you better than yesterday.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Before investing heavily in your product (such as buying a large inventory), run a marketing test to see if you have a product-market fit. Try to sell your product before having it or finalizing the development.
  2. Before running a marketing test and crafting your final product, do a lot of market research to see if your product hits the market bullseye. (Are you selling exactly what the market wants?)
  3. When launching a business, think about your audience first. The reality is that if you can help a specific audience in multiple ways, that’s where you will make the most profits. Selling 1 product is really just a fraction of the potential a business has and the value it can create for its target market.
