Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Deckard, Founder of Peak Mobility, located in Ocean City, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Whether you've been stuck behind zoom calls all day or are an active cross-fitter, stiffness, and soreness are soon to follow. I focus on therapeutic massage, fascia blasting, cupping, and gua sha, which are all geared toward loosening up your muscles and removing fascial restrictions, which in turn, leaves you with improved mobility and happy dances! I also teach gua sha self-care courses online and throughout South Jersey.

Tell us about yourself

At 21, I unexpectedly lost my hearing. After five years of teaching myself how to communicate via reading lips and (thankfully) technological communications, adapting took a toll on my physical health while stuck in the corporate world. Soon after, I was a lucky recipient of a cochlear implant which has continued to work fantastically. With my implant, I still only hear uni-laterally — in turn, my body is constantly imbalanced, and my cervical spine is literally constantly twisting. Chronic neck pain trickles down into the back and hip stiffness. Top that off with various sedentary jobs; I decided f— that!

Getting the knowledge to identify and relieve my underlying symptoms has empowered me to finally live comfortably and happily. The methods I used can be utilized for various ailments — I am incredibly grateful to be able to share similar healing with my clients!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Flatout owning a successful business. Haha! Honestly, just being able to make a living from what I'm passionate about and love doing feels like a pretty big accomplishment for me!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

All of the backend stuff, for sure. It's just me, so aside from treating clients in person, working on marketing, accounting, social media, logistics between stores that sell my tools, and hosting new gua sha self-care classes, it's a lot to tackle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid marketing plan.
  2. Get a great accountant.
  3. Do it in something that you're really, really passionate about. Don't do it just to do it.
