Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carla Rodrigues, Founder of Pawsitive Healing, located in Jacksonville, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Veterinarian that specializes in mobility and function. I practice acupuncture, rehabilitation, and spinal manipulation as part of what I offer my patients for comfort and improved mobility. I am also a life coach and an author.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a proud Portuguese-American, born and raised in Northern New Jersey. After I graduated from my alma mater, Montclair State University, with a Biology degree, my wanderlust and passion to explore inspired me to move to the Caribbean, where I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Ross University in Saint Kitts.

Throughout my years of practicing as a veterinarian, I could not deny my passion for helping restore comfort and function to my patients. Whether I am treating a young, injured pet or an arthritic senior, there is something so special about being a part of the happiness and fulfillment that comes with alternative and integrative medicine. Healing pets is my absolute passion. What I love most is that through the treatment of my patients, I am able to help people, too. It’s a win-win.

Life coaching is my way of helping people more directly as there is a dire need for guidance and inspiration in our society. Each and every one of us has a life purpose- a goal- our soul's commitment- a mission; however we label it, our sense of purpose lies at the core of our true happiness and inner peace.

Within my own growth and evolution, it has now become much clearer to me when I reflect on all my life experiences, whether challenging or catalyzing, how they have shaped the person I am now and the person I continue to evolve to be.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The smiles on the faces of my clients and even my patients! I have been fortunate to help so many geriatric, injured, and neurologic patients recover and have a great quality of life!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries in honor of knowing your value and what you offer. The second most difficult is the number of hours and commitment needed to maintain a successful business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You alone create your own life. Be persistent and find your options.
  2. The only opinion that matters is your own. Do your own thing and follow your heart.
  3. Know your value.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship has changed my life. Take that leap.
