What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a holistic veterinarian in the Orlando, Florida, area. I handcraft my own natural products for pets using safe, natural ingredients. My customers are dog and cat owners looking for holistic ways to treat their pets. I provide products for skin, ears, fleas, and dental problems and also provide holistic pet information on my blog and with my Holistic Pet Tips.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a practicing holistic veterinarian since 1995. Over the years, I saw a need for more natural products for treating my patients that just weren't commercially available. So I started making products as needed to treat different ailments in pets. I would just make them up to order using natural ingredients such as aloe, essential oils, witch hazel, etc. Over time I developed formulas that worked consistently. Now I've made them available for clients to purchase online to use on their own pets.
My Healing Gel was the first product I developed, and it is still my most popular product! I make all of the products in my holistic veterinary clinic, Animal Healing Solutions, in Altamonte Springs, FL. I absolutely love what I do, and I also practice acupuncture, chiropractic, Chinese herbal medicine, aromatherapy, and nutrition on dogs and cats.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is seeing my pet patients get better without having to use a lot of chemicals or drugs. Our pets are living longer, just like we are, and I think it's important to educate pet owners on natural treatments and good nutrition so they can have a long and healthy life.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is trying to do everything yourself. It's hard to know when to delegate and who to trust to help you with your business. Keeping up with social media can also be a huge challenge. I want to make myself easy to contact online, but the challenge is not getting overwhelmed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I think the number one tip is to just do it! Don't keep procrastinating. It's easy to get things started online with a simple website or a Facebook or Instagram page. There is also a lot of online information to help get you started that is easily searchable.
- Find a niche that appeals to you or you have expertise in and focus on that. It also helps to do some research to see if there is a need for what you have to offer.
- I love what I do because my clients are happy that I find solutions or relief to their pet's problems or ailments. I think starting a business that involves something that you love or have a passion for, and not just something to make money will have a huge impact on how you feel about the business and how well it does.
