Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in organizational development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paul DeChant, CEO of Paul DeChant, MD, MBA, LLC., located in San Ramon, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I advise health system senior leaders on how to reduce burnout by fixing the workplace, not simply helping healthcare workers become more resilient.

Tell us about yourself

My passion is making workplaces healthier places for people to work. Burnout results from (1) poorly designed workflows that force people to waste time on administrivia and (2) management approaches that don't respect and support the worker. My work addresses both of those issues.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As CEO, I transformed a 300-physician group over 5 years using the theme of "Returning Joy to Patient Care." We improved physician satisfaction from the 45th to 87th percentile and were recognized as the highest-rated group among 170 medical groups across the state of California two years in a row. The greatest reward was watching everyone blossom into the humans they had the potential to be.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The pressure of ultimate responsibility while focusing on nurturing your people and your business. There is a lot of uncertainty.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Align your business with your values; otherwise, why do it?
  2. Understand your customers deeply. Doing so ensures you do more than meet their needs; you will delight them with your service or product.
  3. Focus on growing your business. Avoid distractions, which are all around.
