Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gurdeep Bhogal, Yoga Teacher & Reiki Master of Parinama - Transformative Healing Arts, located in Marblehead, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Parinama - Transformative Healing Arts is a Holistic Practice based in Marblehead, MA. I am a Yoga Teacher, Certified Medium, Trance Medium, and Reiki Master Teacher. I serve the needs of anyone looking for Intuitive one-to-one guidance, to connect with loved ones on the Spirit side of life, and to initiate healing and re-balancing. I offer group Yoga classes and workshops at studios on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I teach everything to do with Intuitive & Mediumistic Development, all aspects of Yoga and Healing modalities such as Reiki. I also offer Healing group events and private group readings known as a 'Spirit Salon.' My clients are primarily women who want to connect on a deeper and spiritual level with healing and the mystical Arts.

Tell us about yourself

My curiosity for all things spiritual has been with me since childhood. I was always fascinated by the afterlife and very connected to and interested in my ancestral spiritual traditions, as well as Metaphysics Mediumship, Intuition, psychic connection, and philosophy. Around 2004, I began my journey of attunement to Reiki and started sitting in Mediumship development classes along the way; a few awakening experiences deepened my connection to the mystical Arts. My growing skill with Mediumship, spurred by my involvement in my local Spiritualist church, as well as my deepening Yoga practice and training, led me to start offering services to the public. I left a 20-year Corporate career in 2019, propelled by my love for Spiritual work, to open Parinama - Transformative Healing Arts. The Sanskrit word 'Parinama' translates as 'Transformation,' and this reflects the many cycles of transformation that I have personally experienced throughout life. As an empathic spiritual practitioner, I am motivated by a deep calling to serve in my capacity as a Healer, Teacher, and Guide. One of the tenets of my ancestral religion, Sikhism, is Seva (service). My deep connection to Spirit informs how I express my innate abilities and gifts with the World, and my love for my work as a teacher and guide stems from the empowering nature of the practices I teach; my students and their unfolding journeys are my greatest inspiration!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was very fortunate to be able to navigate a new business through the COVID pandemic. I swiftly embraced technology when I had to close my very new physical office at the onset of the pandemic. My faith in the power of my offerings helped me to adapt and switch to an online business model during the lockdown. My creativity and determination helped my practice not only survive but to thrive and grow. I adapted my business model to include important collaborations with other small businesses, Yoga studios, and sole proprietors to help all of us reach more people and gain exposure. I am proud of the success I was able to achieve as a sole proprietor navigating the unknown entity of COVID.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is managing time. Depending on the nature of your business, you may work long hours (but can work on refining your schedule over time). You also have no 'paid vacation time' and have to account for the challenges of unexpected illness. There is an enormous amount of freedom in working for yourself, but there is also more responsibility that you shoulder. However, when you are working at a labor of love or your calling in life, then all of the sacrifices are worth it. The sense of satisfaction at creating a working life that is filled with genuine purpose is priceless!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan ahead! If you're starting a new business, have a clear plan and a financial cushion to relieve any unknowns.
  2. Accept help and support. Make sure you are surrounded by cheerleaders and delegate tasks where necessary (even if you have to pay for a part-time assistant or helper). It's truly impossible to do everything yourself.
  3. Be inspired by others in your field, and most importantly, believe in yourself!
