Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Achtman, Founder of Pandaste Yoga, located in Northbrook, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach children's yoga classes. Many of my classes are for babies and toddlers with their caregivers, but I also teach preschool and elementary students. I teach classes in my backyard but have also partnered with schools, park districts, and other organizations to provide classes.

Tell us about yourself

Previously, I was an elementary special education teacher and became a stay-at-home mom when my daughter was born. I have my adult yoga certification and have always thought about combining my love of yoga and children. After some time transitioning to being a mom, I wanted to do something for myself also. I combined my love of teaching and yoga to begin teaching classes to young children. It was also fun teaching toddlers and their caregivers because I could bring my daughter to classes also!

While this is the primary age group I teach, I also have taught classes to preschoolers and elementary-age students, which is fun because I can do different activities based on their age and abilities! My motivation is sharing my love of yoga with children and teaching them strategies they can use to regulate their emotions from a young age.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is taking the leap to start my own business. It's been fun sharing my passion for yoga and creating different themed classes to teach. It's also rewarding when the children start learning the routines and have favorite poses and songs to request.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is finding consistent customers. A lot of people have come to one class but then don't return. Having only 1-2 people sign up for a class or offering classes that no one signs up for is frustrating.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be flexible! When things aren't working, find a way to change them and try something new.
  2. Make connections with others in the community. You never know who can help you or someone you can partner with to learn from and grow.
  3. Do your research! See what other businesses in your area are charging for services to see what is reasonable and how to be competitive.
