Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Diehl, Owner of Palmetto Puzzle Works, located in North Charleston, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create wooden brainteaser puzzles. From easy to extreme, there is something for everyone.

Tell us about yourself

I come from an engineering family with a mechanical background. I've also had a lifelong passion for art. The combination of these traits led me to design my own puzzles. Just for fun at first, but more people became intrigued by my work, so I continued creating. I love to make people think. It's always rewarding to see people solve one of my puzzles and celebrate it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to do what I love for a living. I hope to continue to do so for as long as I am able.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The actual "business" side of it. I loathe running numbers, organizing, and clerical work. Lots of people may differ from me on this, but I'm very hands-on and love creating.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small. Find out what works and build on that.
  2. Don't get frustrated. Let-downs and setbacks are unavoidable.
  3. Don't do it all alone. There's just too much. Overburdening yourself will lead you to hate what you do.
