Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Bernard, Owner of Owl & Envelope, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Owl and Envelope specialize in luxury wedding and event stationery and signage. We serve heartfelt clients who want artisan stationery and signage for a high-end experience that communicates their personalities and story to guests.

Tell us about yourself

I started working with stationery in 2006, starting with a small notecard shop on Etsy. In 2015, I designed wedding stationery for my best friend, and then my own in 2016, and Owl & Envelope weddings were born in 2018. I love working with clients to tell their stories through their wedding and event branding and combine their unique vision with high-end design. Taking a client's idea and bringing it to life in a way that brings them joy is my highest motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've had the privilege of serving over 100 couples and multiple businesses, and being a part of their joyful moments through my work is hands down my biggest accomplishment. We've had the privilege of working at many of Austin's top venues, being a part of SXSW, and being published in multiple outlets, but my biggest accomplishment will always be tears of joy in the eyes of my clients when their dream stationery comes to life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is full of a rollercoaster of highs and lows, and it can be easy to lose yourself in the everyday hustle and bustle of owning a business. Finding time to feed your creativity, socialize with loved ones, and maintain a high sense of self-worth and well-being is probably the hardest thing I've encountered as a solopreneur.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you love the "job" of your job. Running a business can sound enticing when you only focus on end products, but the day-to-day mundane is where the work is, and if you don't love that part of the business you're starting, you might want to reconsider.
  2. Run your business from day one the way you want it to run in 5 years. Don't let it take over everything. Make sure to set clear boundaries for yourself and your clients.
  3. Reach out and build a community! Look for other small business owners in and out of your industry to build relationships with. It can be a total lifesaver!
