Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Fraser, Founder & CEO of Outway, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Outway, our goal is to provide the ultimate combination of comfort and performance in every pair of socks we make. We use only the best materials, are sourced responsibly, and pack in all the tech features you need to tackle whatever life throws your way. From hiking to sports to just lounging around, we've got a sock for every occasion. Our customers lead a dynamic, active lifestyle and appreciate the quality and functionality of their everyday products.

Tell us about yourself

Tired of having separate socks for different occasions, in 2016, we set out on a mission to create the ultimate pair of socks that could handle the technical demands of sports while providing cloud-like comfort and style for everyday wear. With a 500 sq/ft basement as our starting point, we crafted Outway Socks - the world's most comfortable performance socks. Today, Outway Socks are a testament to our commitment to providing active individuals with the best of both worlds - performance and stylish comfort in one versatile pair of socks.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Bootstrapping the growth of the business for five years, becoming Canada's leading digitally native sock brand, and creating over 20 jobs during the global pandemic. Beyond that, creating a product people love and getting to work with a talented team to continually grow and innovate is a pleasure.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Entrepreneurship can be lonely at times. Your problems are unique to your circumstances and, in some instances, novel. You have to navigate the unknown while putting on a brave face for those you lead. That said, it's a wonderful journey, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now and stop overthinking. Gain momentum and aim to improve each day.
  2. Create a product that actually solves a problem. Ideally, it's an issue you face, and you are uniquely qualified to solve it.
  3. Focus on the main thing. Don't get distracted. Take the time to master your craft and be patient.
