Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicky Guadagni, co-founder of Outloud Speakers School, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Actors teach public speaking skills mostly to business professionals but really to anyone who wants to improve how they communicate - physically and vocally.

Tell us about yourself

I've been an actress for close to 50 years. I've taught acting and directed and have developed the skill to quickly identify and get around habits that are undermining someone's effectiveness. That's gratifying. Often the solution is simple.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having a business partner who is 35 years younger than me and is driven and ambitious at a time in my life (I'm 68) when I'm neither of those. Yes, I do want a successful company, and he is getting us there.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding clients when you know what you have to offer will be a game-changer for them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick a partner that complements your skills and doesn't mimic them.
  2. If you can afford it, farm out the work that takes you five times longer to complete than it should.
  3. Talk to other entrepreneurs whenever you get the chance.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't drive yourself crazy. Meditate. Dance. Be joyful. Play frisbee. Work smart. Figuring out simpler, easier ways of doing things sometimes comes when you're walking in the park.
