Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Baird, CEO of Our Fit Family Life Inc, located in Bend, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a pre & postnatal fitness expert specializing in core and pelvic floor function, with a Masters Degree in Sports Science. I help Mothers restrengthen their core from within, during, and after pregnancy by offering comprehensive online programs based on unique core exercises.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been very active, but I didn't have a strategy during and after my first pregnancy to restrengthen my core safely before returning to my favorite activities. As a result, I lived three years with pelvic floor dysfunction, unbalanced core, aches, and pain. It wasn't visible, though! From the outside, most people thought I had regained a very fit body after my first child, but I was a mess on the inside. Long story short, I worked my way to a closet full of Pre & Postnatal Fitness certifications to educate and heal myself. I now share this information in my programs. Our society puts a lot of stress on the Mothers to "get their body back" and then normalizes pads to deal with incontinence! My mission is to help other Moms avoid the common pitfalls and help them recover safely and efficiently after baby. Every client testimonial means the world to me and pushes me to keep doing what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to make a living pursuing my passion. There's a song from the Dirty Heads saying, "I'm on vacation every single day 'cause I love my occupation." It's not easy, I work hard, but that's how I feel!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is balancing personal and work life. This business is like my 3rd baby, always in the back of my mind. I think of my students and how I could refine my online programs. I'm always searching for inspiration for social media, new blog posts, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I won't talk about the obvious "study your market, research your competitors, have a plan, ..." but here are 3 pieces of advice I'd give anyone looking to start, run and grow a business:

  1. Find something that excites you. Growing a business takes up a huge space in your mind. You need to truly love it and believe that what you offer works.
  2. There will probably be some growing pains. It's a process, and it can be frustrating at times. So make sure to learn from your mistakes, then move on! Remember to put what you've learned into practice, listen to your customers, and learn from people in your industry while remaining creative and true to yourself.
  3. The imposter syndrome is real with most highly skilled and high achieving people - don't let it haunt you. The more you learn, the more you may realize what you have yet to learn. I find continuing education and training a great way to reaffirm my skills and confidence.
