Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Ragano, owner of Oui Chef, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a kids' cooking school. I used to teach adults who were becoming pastry chefs. After having my daughter, I needed some more balance in my life, and I combined my professional and parent life to open Oui Chef. My goal is to teach kids how to prepare "real" food, not kid food, and introduce them to new flavors, and I want them to leave my kitchen proud and excited about what they have created.

Tell us about yourself

I opened my business so my daughter will still have an involved parent. I wanted more control over my life and work choices. I am motivated by my students, who are excited to learn about and experience new foods and recipes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the excitement on my students' faces when they have tried a new food that they were afraid of and LOVE it! Opening their worlds to food and teaching them not to be scared to try something new is very rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding balance and learning it's ok to say no sometimes is challenging. Also, this business is my other baby, and it is hard to relinquish some control sometimes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in and trust yourself and your vision.
  2. Build trust with your customers. They are your best marketing.
  3. Make some parameters for yourself and take care of yourself too.
