Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Hall, Owner of Oscar Bravo Golf, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Oscar Bravo Golf is a golf apparel and lifestyle brand dedicated to those who take the game seriously but are unwilling to take themselves too seriously. Premium quality apparel and accessories without the pretense.

Tell us about yourself

I love to build teams and build brands. I've been fortunate to be a part of successful teams and brand-building projects throughout my life and career. From playing high school and college basketball to coaching to start-ups, I love to create and lead successful teams. After founding and building, and ultimately selling an award-winning advertising agency - responsible for building and growing a variety of both established brands and start-ups - I wanted to create from scratch a consumer brand of my own. With Oscar Bravo Golf, I am combining my love of brand building, golf, and our French Bulldog, Oscar.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Quitting my regular job - 3 months before the birth of our first child - to become the "Founder" of a one-man agency and then leading and growing it to national recognition as one of the leading promotions agencies in the US. And then reinventing and repositioning the agency to become a strategic branding and creative agency that was ultimately recognized as an Ad Age - Agency of the Year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding and dedicating the proper amount of time to think through the long-term planning and positioning that is required for growth while making sure there is flawless execution of the day-to-day activities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start today. Don't wait for the perfect time. The perfect time is now.
  2. If you can, pay every invoice immediately upon receipt. Don't wait for its due date. You will establish great credit and, equally important, build goodwill and reputation among the vendors you need to do great work. Earning the reputation of "pays like a clock" will serve as an excellent reference as you grow, and they will have your back should you need it in the future.
  3. Communicate early. Often and in the most direct (but pleasant!) fashion possible. Create regular occasions to tell your team how much you appreciate all they do to contribute to the team's success.
