Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carly Guggemos, co-owner of Organic Coaching LLC., located in DeWitt, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Organic Coaching, a triathlon coaching company that focuses on helping busy professionals train smarter with the time they have available. Our goal is to provide streamlined triathlon coaching for the busiest of people to help eliminate decision fatigue, so you can wake up, tackle your training, and know you are on the right path to hitting your athletic goals, whether it's finishing your first Ironman or hit a new personal record!

Tell us about yourself

I grew up knowing I wanted to work with the human body but wasn't sure in what form or what that meant exactly. In my late teens and early 20s, I got involved with human performance and sport. This opened the gateway! I went to university and got my bachelor's and Master's degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in endurance performance. Shortly after university, I started racing Ironman triathlons and saw amazing results. People started asking me about my training, how I was doing so well, my "secrets," and slowly that's how I got started coaching! I love what I get to call work, helping people reach their goals, become healthier, and do things they often never thought possible!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is building a sustainable business from the ground up. Organic Coaching was born in 2014; we are fast approaching ten years in business. We started very small as solopreneurs and have grown to a coaching team of five triathlon coaches, one registered dietitian nutritionist, and an office assistant. I'm very proud of our slow and gradual growth over the years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things about being a business owner is the unknown of the future, but that can also be exciting with the right mindset. The other hard part is never truly being about to "turn off" and unplug. Don't get me wrong, I do my best, but my mind is always thinking about stuff that needs to get done or ways to improve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take messy action; fear or perfectionism can oftentimes stop us from even starting. Messy action at first is okay! It gets the ball rolling, and you will figure out your process, and it will get better. But start!
  2. Don't try to be everything to everyone. Know who your product or services are and focus on that. I truly believe Organic Coaching is what it is today because we focus on what we are good at and who we best serve.
  3. Start small and keep your blinders on. It's easy to get caught up in what others are doing.
