Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janet Carey, Founder of Optimum Health Coaching, originally from Ireland and now based in the Algarve, Portugal.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a fully qualified nutrition and lifestyle coach who is soon to be a qualified nutritional therapist. I set up my business, Optimum Health Coaching, over two years ago. My mission is to inspire people to take control of their health so they can live healthy and a happy life.

There is so much conflicting information being thrown at us every day from various sources about the latest diets, supplements, or lifestyle trends that it can get confusing; that is why with a personalized nutrition and lifestyle plan that is tailored to your individual needs, you can be sure you will get the right knowledge and tools so improving your health can be an enjoyable journey.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been passionate about health and fitness and have worked in the industry for over 13 years, having previously worked in the financial sector. I understand that working and parenting can feel overwhelming, and often people put looking after their health at the bottom of their list. A few years ago, I lost two family members and a friend (a young mom) within the space of a few months, and then soon after, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

This was a very difficult time for me personally, and I went through a period of suffering from health anxiety. It was this experience, as I began researching various diseases, their causes, treatments, and preventative measures, that led me to go back to study nutrition therapy and inspired my change of career. I feel so grateful to have found my passion, and I want to share it by helping others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is helping people improve their health & well-being. I love my weekly check-ins with clients, hearing how the changes they have made to their nutrition or lifestyle have had such positive impacts on their lives. There is no better feeling than knowing you have helped someone to improve their health, and it often has a knock-on effect as they pass this knowledge on to their children, family, friends, or work colleagues.

Sadly, chronic disease is now a global epidemic, and 70% of these diseases can be prevented or reduced through nutrition and lifestyle changes. If I can help even just a very small percentage of these people to avoid one of these awful diseases, then that is the best accomplishment for me!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner usually entails being constantly on the go! All of the responsibility lies with me. However, after running my own businesses for many years, I've learned to separate work and personal life. I practice what I preach about managing stress, prioritizing sleep, self-care, and family time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. For anyone wanting to start their own business, I would say:
Go for it! Don't let fear hold you back.
  2. Make sure it is something you are passionate about. Job satisfaction is so important.
  3. Get help. It's hard to do it all on your own. Find a mentor, and surround yourself with like-minded people and support groups. And don't forget to take time for yourself! Your health is your true wealth.
