Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tamara Hagel, the founder of Blessing Blossoms, a florist, in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

I am a florist, and created Blessing Blossoms with the mission to spread happiness one petal at a time. My customers come from all walks of life and I’m honoured they trust me to do just this!

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

I created Blessing Blossoms after my son was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 18 months. My mission has always been to spread happiness and love with every piece that leaves my workshop. I am motivated by the hard work, kind hearts, and strong souls in this world. I’m a believer that the more we build each other up, the more opportunity we all have to achieve our purpose in life- and do it with a smile on our face. Life can be very daunting at times, and from experience I can say, that often times there are no words that can make you feel better- sometimes it’s just a kind gesture: a hug, a smile, or perhaps some flowers!

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Hands down my most treasured time of year is Christmas. After a 33 day stay in the hospital post-surgery, our son was discharged on December 23rd, 2017. During that time, we were blown away at the efforts the nurses, doctors and volunteers made to create a special Christmas atmosphere for all of us. This experience called on my heart and lead me to create my Yellow Button Grinch Trees. Each tree sold during the Christmas season contributes to the toys that we deliver to the Alberta Childrens Hospital in time for Christmas. Delivering our truckload of toys has become a family tradition and something all four of us look forward to every Christmas season.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

Like any business owner, I have aspirations of growth with Blessing Blossoms, but that doesn’t come without a cost. Some days I feel like I’ve stretched every minute I can to complete all things business and personal that day. Every year I do get better at the delicate balance of work and personal- but there are still seasons I struggle with this. I’m learning to offer myself more grace, and ask for help when I need it- something that doesn’t come easy to me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

1. Find your “why.” This will be what drives you to success, especially on the overwhelming days.

2. Follow your passions. I’m a believer that when you follow what makes you happiest, you’ll share that light with the world and impact every single one of your customers in a positive way. And there could never be enough positivity in our world!

3. Introduce yourself. Reach out to other business owners. I’m learning that we are a family- and truly want success for all of each other. Capture every piece of expertise you can from the veterans.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Really, I just want to say thank you! I feel so blessed to be doing what I love. It wouldn’t be possible without others honouring my passions and supporting me by choosing Blessing Blossoms as their florist of choice!
