Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ruth Agbasimalo, Founder of OmariSkin, located in Lagos, Nigeria.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

OmariSkin was founded in 2020 with the intent to fulfill a need for science-backed skincare that's transparent and safe. We aim to combine potent ingredients and modern science to make products that work effectively to strengthen the skin barrier and help accelerate your skin's natural healing process.

We create enjoyable and safe, thoughtful experiences for all skin types. We set a standard in skincare, helping you to attain healthy skin and glow in the safest way possible. Our customers are people who genuinely love their skin and want to care for it in the best way.

Tell us about yourself

I birthed OmariSkin from a place of frustration. I developed boils all over my body right after giving birth and I kept taking antibiotics that did not help. The Nigerian skincare industry is saturated with skin-lightening products and has no other product offerings. I didn't set out to start a business, but I wanted to learn more about skin. When I started researching, I finally figured out that I was using products that damaged my skin.

While learning more about the skin, I got my certification and began making products to address my skin issues. I started the business about 6-8 months after the ordeal. My biggest goal is to help people understand their skin so they can ensure that whatever they put on their skin is good for them. I wanted to help people make educated choices.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My most significant achievement is my attitude towards work. I love what I'm doing, something not everyone can say for themselves. I love that my business allows me that space to care about the customer, which is also one of our most significant achievements.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dealing with the unknown is one of the most difficult challenges I have to overcome as a business owner. There will be new difficulties to overcome every day. Regardless of your level of preparation, business is never predictable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take it one day at a time while planning for the future of your business. Otherwise, you'll break down.
  2. You need to be consistent if you want to be successful.
  3. Start every day prepared to learn and improve your process or craft, every day, and you'll be shocked at how much you've grown.
