What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a portrait photographer who delivers custom photography services to families and businesses in North Texas. While I offer a range of services, including family portraits, high school senior sessions, headshots, personal branding sessions, and commercial photography, all of my clients are carried through the same three-step process. My goal is to create a planned photography experience that is enjoyable and stress-free for all my clients.

Tell us about yourself

I began carrying a camera around at the age of six. After earning a journalism degree, I started my career as a photojournalist, working for newspapers and magazines. Then I landed a dream job as a photography editor at the Boy Scouts of America, helping to publish national magazines. Once my son was born, I left the corporate world to focus on my family. Thankfully, I could continue working as a freelance photographer and maintain relationships with the stellar media production team at the BSA. We created terrific projects together and were able to experience epic adventures. In September 2019, I formed my own company to share my photography experience locally with families and businesses in North Texas. Personally connecting with clients and delivering meaningful artwork to build a legacy for families or shape businesses has been an enriching experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been learning how to run a successful business! Like many small business owners, I do not have a degree in entrepreneurship. I was in "business boot camp" during my first two years as I learned about administration, accounting, taxes, CRMs, marketing, and networking. I am thrilled to help other entrepreneurs, especially women, network to find the right partners to help them thrive. I think that's why personal branding sessions are one of my favorite types of sessions. My clients and I often "click" very quickly because we have experienced the same challenges of starting something new.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging things about running my business has been setting boundaries, especially for myself. There is always something to work on, a task that needs to be done. Many of us started businesses because we are passionate about our service and want a flexible schedule. We don't realize that we can easily fall into the trap of always being "on call." While my schedule is varied due to the nature of my work, I have set office hours for administrative tasks. I am trying hard to keep regular business hours to allow myself to be present for my family, friends, and other commitments.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips if you are planning to start a business: First, you must have clarity in the service or product you are offering and who it benefits. Second, gather your key people quickly. This includes legal counsel, a CPA, a banker, an insurance agent, and a marketing expert. Third, start with a clear voice and brand. This means being consistent in how you show up in the world, in real life, and online. If you can afford to hire professionals to help you create your brand identity (logo, trademark, font, colors, website, copywriting, imagery, etc.), do so. It will save you time and money in the long run, and you will immediately present yourself in a more professional light. Also, have a trusted photographer who will help you look polished and professional and give you a stress-free photography experience!
