Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kent Ferguson, owner of Chiropractic Wellness Clinic, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have the opportunity own and operate a health care clinic focused on health maintenance and wellness. Our customers are everyday people. People who work go to school but also live an active lifestyle outside of those activities. We have the opportunity to care for expectant mothers and their newborn babies when they arrive. We care for many retirees seeking to enjoy the time they have to the fullest.

No matter who we have the opportunity to work with. We always begin with a detailed evaluation and consultation to understand past health, present health, and health goals.

Tell us about yourself

I am the son of immigrants who moved to Canada in the 70's from beautiful Trinidad and Tobago. My grandmother, Edna, was the first person to show me that our bodies are capable of healing and regulating us if we give them the right help. That concept describes what motivated me to seek out health care as a profession.

Working with people, in the clinic, on a daily basis is extremely rewarding. Being able to assist in functional changes that add real value to people's lives makes is my biggest motivator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment? I've been in practice for 19 years, and in many ways, I feel like I'm just getting started. I have the opportunity to work with very skilled massage therapists, acupuncturists, and dieticians for in-house referrals. I have the opportunity to work with grandparents, parents, and children of the same family. I am nowhere close to being bored of learning as I continue to learn and improve on techniques. That's tough and probably a question I can truly answer when I retire.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is making sure I continue to care for myself. Being a wellness-based chiropractor, I communicate to my patients the need for self-care and a balanced lifestyle. I am also a business owner, so I need need to make sure that I follow my own advice. It would be next to impossible for me to be at my best for my staff and patients if I were not getting exercise, rest, eating well, and receiving regular adjustments.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your industry.
  2. Know your marketing.
  3. Track your numbers.
